| Opinions Barbs & Bouquets for Jan 5, 2008 Sycamore residents are asked for their inputBouquet - When U.S. Rep. Dennis Hastert retired late last year, he triggered the need for a special primary and special general election to find someone to fill his 14th Congressional District seat for the rest of his term. Gov. Rod Blagojevich set the special primary for Feb. 5, the same day as the regular primary. But he set the special general election for March 8, just 32 days later. That's not enough time for election officials to follow federal and state statutes regarding absentee ballots and canvassing. Instead of waiting for the inevitable lawsuit from a candidate or voter complaining about being disenfranchised, election officials are taking action now. The county clerks and election officials of seven counties - including DeKalb County Clerk Sharon Holmes - filed their own lawsuit this week against Blagoje-vich, the Illinois State Board of Elections and the five political candidates running in the special primary in hopes of getting exemptions from federal and state election law so they can hold the special general election. They're asking a federal judge to provide a blanket set of dates and regulations they will all follow. It's nice to have elected officials thinking of the best interests of the voters.
