In Our View: Waiting for the other shoe
Imagine a turn-of-the-century boarding house with sleeping rooms on multiple floors. A third-floor boarder stumbles back to the boarding house after making a long night of it, somehow makes it into the room and sits down on the side of the bed. He pulls off his left shoe and drops it to the floor, causing a thunderous noise and immediately waking the gentleman sleeping in the room below. Suddenly mindful of his early-hour rudeness, the man sitting on the side of his bed slowly and carefully removes the other shoe and silently places it on the wooden floor. Meanwhile, one floor below, the person startled from sleep by the first shoe struggles to stay awake long enough to avoid a repeat occurrence - waiting for the other shoe to drop.
